| A POP is a term that is commonly used in the internet industry to denote a central facility or hub which subscribers use to access the internet provider's broadband backbone. A WIPOP exists where subscribers are linked to the POP by a wireless connection and the broadband backbone is provided by either a hard- wire or high bandwidth wireless link.
WIPOPs provide a number of advantages over hard wire solutions: - Easier and quicker installation - Set up cost is a fraction of establishing hard wire systems - Easy and inexpensive to upgrade as new technology demands and provides higher data rates. - No need to be dependent on the services and delays of local telcos. - Significaly lower costs of operation vs. hardware systems.
