| Whats all the excitement about? You keep hearing about Wireless Internet, IP Mobility and connectivity anywhere. So why is everyone so excited? Right now there is a "land grab" similar to the wild west days going on as thousands of organizations and individuals who understand wireless connectivity are rushing to deploy equipment and stake their claim on the future. We will try to hit some key points to show you why these people are so excited about deploying WIPOPs and offering wireless connectivity. By setting up a WIPOP, you can offer your customers high speed Internet connectivity without wires. This is especially attractive for existing ISPs. The advantages of a WIPOP over land line solutions include: High Speed: Up to 11 Mbps versus typical 56 Kbps dial up connection or 1.544 Mbps T-1 line. Reliable: Because the links are unaffected by rain, snow or fog and there is no risk of having fiber cut, the service is extremely reliable. Because the WIPOP is always on and is not restricted by the number of incoming phone lines, your customers will NEVER get a busy signal. Industry Standard: By utilizing IEEE 802.11 compliant equipment, compatibility with other equipment including PC manufacturer original equipment is maximized. License Free: License free operation permits rapid deployment by eliminating the cost and restrictions of licensing procurement. Long Distances: Line of sight distances of 30 miles have been achieved and 5-10 mile radius of coverage from the WIPOP are typical. This compares very favorable to DSL distance limitations and is available where DSL is not. No local telco involvement: Unlike dial up, DSL or T-1, there is no local telephone company involved in your last mile distribution. If a customer wants the service you can install immediately rather than waiting 30-120 days for the telco to pull a line. Low deployment cost: A typical WIPOP costs around $5000 and the typical subscriber equipment costs around $400. Computer manufacturers are beginning to offer PCs with wireless cards built into them which decreases your costs and difficulty of deployment dramatically. No recurring costs: Since there is no telco local loop connection or DSL provider fee, you have no recurring cost for your last mile solution no matter the number of subscribers. Voice Over IP: Reliable, high quality Voice Over IP solutions are just around the corner. Once widely available, you can use your existing wireless data network to provide telephone services. Do you want to be a telco?
Did we mention that there is no local telco involvement???
The applications for this architecture are endless. The Wireless Internet Point of Presence provides a stable and inexpensive medium to supply high-speed Internet where it is currently unavailable. It can usually provide a more cost-effective solution even in places where other services are available. Owning a WIPOP or a network of WIPOPs allows you to distribute your Internet bandwidth without the entanglements of leasing or maintaining hard-wired connections or phone lines. Although the typical WIPOP configuration consists of a central WIPOP surrounded by subscribers, point-to-point links, relay links and sectorized configurations are just a few of the alternatives available. After the initial investment for hardware your WIPOP can be installed immediately. All it takes are the antennas, cables, amplifiers and network interfaces. Client sites also take minimal time and resources to deploy. Networked or individual customers can both be satisfied and you can even control the amount of bandwidth that your customers receive. Stake your claim on the future! We believe that the more you find out about wireless Internet connectivity, the more that you will want to be involved in its dramatic growth.
